On August 11, UNIST signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM) to pledge mutual support for one another in the pursuit of excellence in Hyperloop-related R&D. UNIST President Mooyoung Jung signed the MoU, while attending the 2016 US-Korea Conference on Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship (UKC), held at Hyatt Regency DFW Airport Hotel, Dallas, TX, United States. In the memorandum of understanding, the two institutes agreed to develop Hyperloop-related fundamental technologies, all in the hopes of enhancing South Korea’s Hyperloop research capabilities. President Jung states, “This agreement will drive significant progress in Hyperloop R&D.” He adds, “By developing Hyperloop-related fundamental technologies, UNIST hopes to pursue leading positions in Hyperloop technology at the global level.” The 2016 UKC was a four-day conference, co-organized by the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA) and The Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST) between August 10 and August 13, 2016. The purpose of this event is to promote networking among participants to allow scientific collaboration between the two countries, as well as to provide young scientists and engineers with an opportunity to learn about and explore their career opportunities.

UNIST has invited local gifted high school students to a week-long national supercomputing camp, which took place on the UNIST campus from August 1 to 5, 2016. The Korea Supercomputing Youth Camp 2016 is an intensive summer camp, specifically designed for high achieving science-gifted students who like science, engineering, mathematics or computers. The event offers students a unique opportunity to listen to keynote speakers, discussing both insights and challenges inside the world of supercomputing. A total of 72 gifted achievers from 23 gifted high schools nationwide partook in this event to expose themselves to the topics and activities that comprise the field of high-performance computing (HPC). UNIST invites local gifted high school students to a week-long national supercomputing camp, held at UNIST from Aug. 1st to 5th, 2016. The conference will kick off Monday with a keynote speech by Dr. Young Il Ko (Seoul National University Hospital), exploring the benefits of supercomputing technologies when applied to medicine. The event provides support to help students build the skills capacity for HPC in the current and future workforce. During the course of the event, participants also had the opportunity to work with next-generation supercomputers not usually available in a typical classroom setting. Each team will be consisting of 1 mentor teacher and 3 students. Working in small peer teams, the students will learn how to build linux-based supercomputers from scratch and to take advantage of HPC resources. They will also partake in multiple breakout sessions, presentations, and a chance to work hands-on with a number of UNIST professors using high-performance computing (HPC) systems. Students at the 2nd Korea Supercomputing Camp 2016 at UNIST on August 1st, 2016. The third day of the event will feature a special lecture by Prof. Sung-Bae Cho (Department of Computer Science) of Yonsei University on "Artificial Intelligence and Mankind". On the forth day, Director Sung Yeob Kim of UNIST Supercomputing Center will be presenting on "Supercomputer for Reality". The entire program wrapped up on Friday with a few more workshops and panels, allowing students to participate in a formal panel discussion to present their final projects. The intent of the panel sessions is to gather opinions and ideas from individuals of all positions. The Supercomputing Youth Camp 2016 is the second annual event, organized by UNIST and Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) in a bid to cultivate future computer scientists.

On July 27th, UNIST signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and CD-Adapco to accelerate the development of gas turbine component technologies. The gas turbine is an internal combustion engine, involving operation at extremes of pressure and temperature. It uses air as the working fluid to power aircraft, trains, ships, and electrical generators. The collaboration represents a significant commitment to work together to design combustion chambers, used for gas turbine engines using UNIST's high-performance supercomputer. In the memorandum of understanding, the three organizations also promised to expand cooperation and exchange in research, as well as to cultivate high-quality technical skilled personnel who will conduct accurate, real-time performance analysis via mechanical design simulations programs. For the sake of a smoother gas turbine engineering R&D and high-skilled manpower cultivation, the Korean branch of CD-Adapco will provide industrial simulation software. President Jung notes, “This Memorandum of Understanding is the evidence for our genuine interest in working together to build a development platform to deepen technical cooperation in the medium to longer term.”

On the afternoon of July 27, 2016, UNIST has launched a new transparency act in a bid to increase transparency and to spread the culture of integrity throughout the campus. This initiative was to install two new integrity mailboxes on campus. The Integrity Mailbox is the window for collecting corruption reports or any suggestions on clean policy and anti-corruption. These mailboxes are located in easily accessible places, one at the UNIST Staff Cafeteria (3F) in Main Administration Building and another at a resting place (2F) in Engineering Building. The corruption reports or any comments on clean policy will be reviewed and managed by UNIST Audit team. All departments involved will, then, discuss ways to resolve corruption issues, if there are any. Auditor Sung Euk Lee of UNIST states, “Taking this opportunity, we hope to increase anti-corruption awareness raising campaigns and activities throughout the campus."

UNIST students have been selected to participate in a five-day summer enrichment program at Korean Air Force Academy, which took place from July 18th to 22nd, 2016. Since 2011, the Korean Air Force Academy has operated a summer camp program to help students establish positive and future-oriented views about the nation. This fun, yet demanding program provides students a solid understanding of the challenges and rewards of life as a cadet, as well as insights into what it means to serve as an officer in South Korea. For this year's summer camp program, a total of 58 undergraduate students from UNIST, POSTECH, Ewha Womans University, Seoul National University of Education, and Sejong University participated to experience a realistic slice of cadet life. SeungHyeon Baeg (School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, UNIST) states, "We had such a meaningful time there, experiencing the fun of military cadet life." JeongHun Kim (School of Materials Science and Engineering, UNIST) is taking paragliding lessons at the academy. During the course of the event, students also had the opportunity to stay at cadet dormitories and participate in a variety of extracurricular physical activities, including obortron and paragliding to heighten students' space perception ability, as well as flying skills. Each student also participated in evacuation drills and training programs, such as marching and CBR (chemical, biological, and radiological) training to enhance their sense of cooperation and community spirit. They also had a chance to fly over Dokdo Island via air force transport plane. President Mooyoung Jung of UNIST states, "We hope that this program could play a positive role in the hearts of students at UNIST, and contribute eventually to building correct values in their hearts."

On July 20, UNIST has launched an ambitious three-day workshop to bring new ideas and engaging conversation to the campus with a festival of humanities, presented by internationally renowned experts, artists, and intellectual innovators. The 2016 UNIST Humanities Festival, organized by UNIST Education Center for Gifted Students is a three-day event, held from Wednesday, July 20 to Friday, July 22, 2016. The event invites students from universities (UNIST, KAIST, POSTECH, GIST, DGIST) and high schools, specialized in Science and Technology. The theme of this year’s festival is “Making Connections between Science and the Humanities” where each of the festival’s platforms serving as an invitation for students to develop useful and practical skills needed to keep up with a rapidly-changing world. The festival will feature academics, artists, and innovators offering special lectures, intimate conversations, and themed activities focused on topics ranging from music, art, movie, literature, design to science and technology. Prof. Jaeweon Cho (School of Urban and Environmental Engineering) delievering a special lecture at the opening ceremony. The first day of the event began with the Opening Ceremony, followed by a special lecture by Professor Jaeweon Cho (School of Urban and Environmental Engineering, UNIST) on the topic “Bringing Science, Arts, and the Humanities Together”. The second day of the festival will feature an assortment of activities, including, “Film Screening and Producer Talk” with Myung-Se Lee, a film producer of the movie “Nowhere to Hide (1999)” and “My Love, My Bride (2014)”.

The recently launched UNIST's brand new outdoor laboratory has now taken on an entirely new look with its added media art works. Media art refers to artworks that depend on a technological component to function. The term 'media' applies to any communication device used to transmit and store information. By incorporating emerging technologies into their artworks, artists using new media are constantly redefining the traditional categories of art. In that sense, Science Walden plays a crucial role in communicating to the public. The structure of Info Blind, provided by Art Center Nabi. The name of the media art work is 'Info Blind', which refers to the blinds, installed on the internal surface of Science Walden. On the surface of each blind slat, LED lights are installed horizontally. The pavillion features walls of translucent polycarbonate to allow visual connection between the inside and outside of the pavillion. When the LED lights are illuminated by different colors of light, they are projected on polucarbonate walls of pavillion to create images for people to see from outside. The images that Info Blind show are the waterless energy-producing toilet system, as well as experimental investigation for the production of biofuel.

On Wednesday, July 6th, 2016, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning has reached out to UNIST in a bid to strengthen entrepreneurship education for college students and expand start-up infrastructure at universities. The "Start-up Talk Concert" was attended by Minister Yang-hee Choi of Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP), Director of Science, ICT & Future HR Policy Bureau, UNIST President Mooyoung Jung, Vice President Jae-Sung Lee, Prof. Franklin Bien (Dean of Public Relations & International Affairs), and UNIST students interested in starting their own business. At the event, two student-led entrepreneurial venture teams from UNIST, Nspoons Inc. and Pedaling talked about their on-going projects, such as 'Big Data based Dog Food Information Site' and 'Daily Private Lesson Application'. KiHyuk Lee, CEO of Nspoons Inc. talking about 'Big Data based Dog Food Information Site' at the Start-up Talk Concert. KiHyuk Lee, CEO of Nspoons Inc. says, "Launching a start-up can be very challenging, but the hardest part of starting up is starting out". He adds, "Keep trying entrepreneurs, you never know how close you are to success". At the "Start-up Talk Concert", Minister Yang-hee Choi of MSIP also delievered a special lecture on startups for youth start-ups, entitled 'Challenge for a Better Future' to mark the occasion. During the lecture, Minister Choi said "Starting a business has a lot of risk, but business failure won't determine your future." The "Start-up Talk Concert" attendees are posing for a group photo on July 6, 2016. UNIST strives to help students develop an entrepreneurial mindset, provide support to student start-up associations and hold forums to link student entrepreneurs and investors. Moreover, UNIST has start-up support systems in place and uses part of their surplus funds and tuition reserves to provide seed money to start-ups launched by its students.

On June 29, 2016, 32 members of the 3rd class of the Advanced Management Program (AMP) received AMP graduate certificates after the completion of the 2016 AMP program at UNIST. The ceremony featured the conferral of degrees, followed by the awarding of honorary degrees, greetings and remarks by Director JaeSuk Seo (Ulsan Branch of Gyeongnam Bank) and City Council BokGuem Jung (Ulsan Buk-gu office), as well as "A Conversation with President Mooyoung Jung of UNIST". At the ceremony, President KangSoo Lee (JiSan Information & Communication), the representative of the 3rd UNIST AMP graduates also gave an address at the completion ceremony: "We are facing diffucult challenges right now with budget cuts and the world financial crisis. Upon completion of the AMP program, we have become better prepared to authentically lead our organizations and inspire a higher level of performance." The Advanced Management Program (AMP) at UNIST is a highly interactive, student-centered educational experience in which leadership skills and abilities are emphasized. The program offers an innovative and continually updated curriculum for senior executives who strive for excellence and are serious about taking their organizations—and themselves—to the next level through innovative leadership.
