UNIST offers informative research internship programs for students from all levels of education, so they could experience using research equipment at laboratories and develop their academic interests. Therefore, UNIST campus is always full of future brightening scientists even during the summer break. Ms. Shim Jung woo, Junior of Energy and Chemical Engineering School, is one of those busy undergraduates during summer. She wakes up early in the morning and spends a busy day at Laboratory, Gymnasium, and Study Room on UNIST campus. Let's follow Ms. Shim's busy day. At Gym Fitness is an important part of Ms. Shim's daily routine. Ms. Shim always tries to fit exercise into her busy schedule since she gets more energetic after working out in the early morning. Therefore, Ms. Shim drags her sleepy body and stops at UNIST Sports Center before going to the Laboratory for research. Usually, she does light aerobic exercise, but sometimes does anaerobic weight training to build more strength. Sports Center is in a perfect location with an easy and quick access from the laboratory and dormitory, so it is not difficult for her to fit exercise into her daily routine. In the Lab Until last year, Ms. Shim was a member of Unistation, on-campus broadcasting station of UNIST. She used to do online radio broadcasting and a noon news everyday. However, she is completing research internship at Prof. Cheol-Min Park's Chemistry laboratory of Natural Science this summer. "I like studying about Organic Synthesis because it can be applied in various areas with a simple theory.", says Ms. Shim. Since Ms. Shim is interested in Organic Synthesis area, she is planning to research on Medicine in order to help as many patients as possible. Group Study Every class is taught in English at UNIST, so Ms. Shim has to dedicate more time and effort to review the classes she is taking. One of the advantages about group studying is that students can gain a deeper understanding of the topic they are covering in classes by discussing with classmates. The disadvantage is that students could end up wasting time on small talks, but group study is surely useful for students who do not speak English as their first language. At Dormitory After a day at laboratory and study room, she reads to rest even if she is very busy with her school work. Her favorite genre of book is thriller. Ms. Shim says, "I love the novelist, Keigo Higashino. I have been collecting his books since I was a middle school student. My dream is displaying all of his books on my book shelf later when I have my own house." About Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Ms. shim sets samples at the laboratory in the morning and takes pictures of samples by using NMR on that night. NMR is an analytical chemistry technique used in quality control and research for determining the content and purity for a sample as well as its molecular structure. At UNIST, all levels of students can use the newest research equipment by making simple reservations at the laboratory.

In a colorful ceremony filled with the presidential emblems, music, and well-wishes from university and community, Dr. Mooyoung Jung was formally inaugurated as the 3rd President of UNIST at the Inauguration Ceremony of UNIST. The ceremony, at 11 a.m. in the auditorium of Main Administration building, was attended by 500 guests, including Dr. Yanghee Choi (Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning), Mr. Gab-yoon Jung (Vice-chairman of the National Assembly), and Presidents from KAIST, GIST, DGIST, and POSTECH. During the course of the event, Dr. Jung gave his inauguration speech in front of the faculty and staff members, students, alumni, government officials and other supporters, moments after being formally inaugurated and presented the official flag of the president. There, he laid out his vision to build on the university's excellence by more effectively promoting and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and research, as well as by cultivating innovative leading talents in science and technology who will shoulder the future of Korea. President Jung states, "It is an honor to stand before you today as President of UNIST." He continues by saying, "UNIST would not be here today if it were not for all the effort and dedication from all the UNIST members. Particularly, I would like to express my special thanks to former President, Dr. Moo Je Cho, for putting all the energy he has into UNIST." President Jung started his term as of Monday, September 28th, 2015 and will remain in his position until the end of September 2019. A UNIST design team, led by Prof. Yunwoo Jung (School of Design and Human Engineering) has announced that its O Stamper Design Concept received the prestigious Red Dot Award 2015 in the Design Concept category. O Stamper Design Concept, designed by a UNIST design team. l Photo Credit: Red Dot Design Award The award-winning design concept, O Stamper is a stamping tool that provides an easy way to adhere paper onto the wall using a round-shaped tape (‘dot’ tape) that comes in 5 different colors. According to the team, with existing ways of sticking paper onto the wall, the process of pulling and cutting tape has been much more complicated and annoying, as fingerprint stains often contaminate the tape, resulting in poor adherence. However, because O Stamper uses a cartridge system, one can easily and cleanly remove the tape without causing any damage to the surface. Moreover, physically it can be also used as a presentation tool as there is a laser beam with a proximity sensor that turns on when it reaches the target. "This is a simple and neat design solution especially for those who like to use the walls to facilitate the creating and sharing of ideas," says Seonghyeon Ahn (School of Design and Human Engineering). It breaks down into the three different disciplines “red dot award: product design”, “red dot award: communication design” and “red dot award: design concept”. The award is given for concepts that combine good design with good ideas. For this year, only 5.7% winning concepts emerged from 31 categories with 4,680 entries from 61 countries. The O Stamper concept defeated over 3,000 other submissions for the award. This year’s Red Dot features six Korea's major universities and companies, including Prof. Jeong's team. Prime among these is Hankooktire Co Ltd.'s Boostrac concept tire which received the prestigious Red Dot: Luminary trophy. The design concept, Boxchool was co-produced by SK Telecom and KAIST was honoured with the top prize in the competition for ground-breaking design, the Red Dot: Best of the Best. Moreover, Hyundai Motor Company's Hyundai Collection and KT's Phonebrella were also recognized for innovative design concepts.

In 2012, Dr. Lee joined UNIST as an Associate Professor with research and teaching focus in secondary rechargeable lithium ion batteries, polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells, as well as ion-exchange membranes. His current research interests are in the development of advanced energy materials for lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells. Dr. Lee wears many academic hats. He received his B.Sc. degree in Chemical Technology from Seoul National University. He obtained his M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and Ph.D. degree in the same field from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 1993 and 1997. Prior to joining UNIST, he worked as a professor of Chemical Engineering at Kangwon National University, Korea. Throughout his career he received multiple awards and honors including, Top 50 Basic Research Award by National Reserach Foundation (2014), Excellence in Reviewing by Journal of Membrane Science, Elsevier (2013), as well as Kangwon Top 10 Patent Awards (2012). He is also a Life member of the Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry (KSIEC), as well as the Korean Electrochemical Society. He has been a member of the Membrane Society since 2013. He was also a Main coordinator of the 16th International Meeting on Lithium Batteries (IMLB) in 2012.

UNIST begins a new era of leadership as Dr. Mooyoung Jung, the 3rd president of UNIST, starts his term as of today, Monday, September 28th, 2015. Following the sudden passing of Dr. Yoon Kyung Do in the School of Nano-Bioscience and Chemical Engineering, the DC-based Immune System & Immunotheraphy (DISNI) Lab has received many messages of sorrow and support from across the UNIST community. Within the University, Dr. Yoon Kyung Do was a deeply committed and hard-working member of UNIST who worked tirelessly as mentor and adviser to many graduate students. She was a visionary scientist, beloved and respected colleague, generous mentor, and loyal friend to many of us. Throughout her outstanding professional career, Dr. Do was recognized for exceptional innovation with numerous honors, including winning the Gold Prize in the Bio Engineering & Life Science field of the 2015 Samsung Human-Tech Thesis Competition and publishing her last paper in a recent issue of Cell Reports. Today, Dr. Tae-Il Kim, Associate Dean for Strategic Affairs (Department of Periodontology, School of Dentistry, Seoul National University) paid a warm tribute to her "remarkable" career. In a tribute to Dr. Do, he has recently written and published a memorial letter in the JPIS (Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science) editorial column (DOI: 10.5051/jpis.2015.45.4.127). Dr. Kim said: "Dr. Do's tremendous passion towards sincere scientific research and her contribution to JPIS will always be remembered." Dr. Do had also once published a memorial letter in the JPIS editorial column in memory of her mentor, Prof. Ralph Steinma when he passed away shortly after his nomination for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2011. This special tribute to Dr. Do has instantly gained worldwide attention when major foreign press, such as PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus published articles about it.

On September, 8, 2015, a crowd of enthusiastic faculty, students, employees, and members of the community assembled to celebrate the official launching and ribbon cutting ceremony for the UNIST Symphony Orchestra (UNISTra). The UNIST Symphony Orchestra (UNISTra) was founded in 2012 by a small group of UNIST students. Under its conductor, Prof. Jong Eun Lee (Division of General Studies) the orchestra has successfully performed nearly 14 large symphonic works. "Throughout its short history, we have been working very hard to provide students and other members of the campus community with the opportunity to expand their musical talents, while at the same time presenting superb musical programs to the campus," says Conductor Lee. UNISTRA is performing at the opening reception under its conductor, Prof. Jong Eun Lee (Division of General Studies) on Sept. 8, 2015. A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by a special concert, featuring a variety of musical instruments including piano, strings, and brass to mark the official opening of UNISTra. The opening concert was held in the new basement auditorium of UNIST Main Administration Building, featuring a special welcoming piano performance by Chair Prof. Kook Joe Shin (Division of General Studies). "We are thrilled at this point in time to introduce our very own UNIST Symphony Orchestra to you," says Chair Prof. Shin. He continues by saying, "UNISTra is a vibrant and exciting part of campus life and we are very proud of this addition and look forward to their progress and development." Conductor Lee states, "We would like to thank all those who have believed in and supported us. In turn, we will work hard to find ways to enhance UNIST's standing and reputation both nationally and internationally."

A UNIST research team, led by Prof. In-cheol Bang (School of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering) has announced that they have developed a safety device that can help prevent another Fukushima disaster, which was caused by the loss of cooling for the spent fuel rods. When tsunami struck Japan in March of 2011, Fukushima Daii-chi NPP did successfully bring the nuclear fission reaction to an emergency halt. However due to the meltown in that reactor, it was impossible to generate power to run the coolant pumps, thereby causing a massive radiation leakage into the air and seawater. Through this study, Prof. Bang's team, introduced a hybrid control rod to halt and cool a nuclear power plant in the event of a nuclear accident. This work has been supported by Pioneer Research Center Program through the National Research Foundation of Korea funded by the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning. Moreover, on September 2, 2015, the team was selected to receive the Best Paper Award and the Best Student Paper Award for their study at the 16th International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics (NURETH-16) in the U.S. Chicago. The International Topical Meeting on NURETH is the most prestigious academic conference in the thermal hydraulic power area, which is held every year by the Chicago Local Section of the Americal Nuclear Society (ANS). Prof. Bang's research team has won the Best Paper Award the 16th International Topical Meeting on NURETH-16 on September 2, 2015.
